Road to Nowhere

Reaction

This body of work reflects my personal journey into parenthood, focusing on the complexities of becoming a mother while navigating my identity as a plus-size single mom. Motherhood transforms a woman fundamentally—giving birth is not just the start of a new life, but also the birth of a new version of oneself. It brings an immense strength, purpose, and meaning, yet it also challenges the very essence of who we are outside of this new role. The emotional weight of motherhood can be overwhelming, and in my case, it often feels like losing a part of myself, the person I was before.
Through both performance and observation, I use the camera to unpack the tensions and anxieties tied to my identity, my body, and my relationship with my daughter. Being in front of the camera allows me to confront the discomfort I feel about my body image and to explore how these feelings impact my sense of self. This vulnerability, though uncomfortable, invites a necessary dialogue about the acceptance and worth of bodies like mine. It opens space for others to reflect on their own perceptions of beauty, strength, and value.
The photographs in this series aim to show a strength that I hope resonates with my audience—a strength that transcends societal constraints and offers a broader understanding of what family can be. Motherhood, for me, is about breaking free from the limitations of conventional ideals and embracing the multifaceted, sometimes messy, but deeply powerful role of being a mother. This is my journey to motherhood, and through my work, I share it with you.
